Universities put Ethics Front and Center in Medical Education

EthAssist® allows higher education to incorporate ethics and bioethics directly and painlessly into the curriculum

January 8, 2018

Pittsburgh, PA, January 8, 2018 - ICBioethics, a US company with a proprietary product called EthAssist®, is enabling the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) to successfully put ethics education at the center of professional healthcare training. EthAssist® is a practical learning content management system (LCMS) that delivers academic and applied bioethics resources to healthcare and life science industry professionals and educators. At LECOM, the nation’s largest medical college and the only Academic Health Center in the osteopathic profession, EthAssist® is being employed as the core teaching tool in the College’s Master of Science in Biomedical Ethics (MSBE) distance education program. This program's applied ethics education strives to move learners beyond knowledge acquisition and skills development to behavioral changes that result in a higher level of professionalism and the delivery of top-quality patient-centered care. The MSBE program is online, except for 2 required onsite days, and can be completed in 18 months.

The distance education approach of this program is perfectly served by the design of EthAssist®, a product combining software and content that is based on the concept of Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs).

An RLO is a self-contained building block of education on a single subject matter. It is designed for a 21st century learning environment where learning is delivered in short bursts of information. Also known as microlearning, the RLO strategy provides a process and framework used to create and deliver learning experiences that support the needs of every client. These learning experiences are constructed out of learning objects to build solutions in multiple learning approaches for a robust set of performance needs and delivery options. Each RLO has a textual and multi-media teaching element as well as graded and non-graded assessment questions.

By utilizing EthAssist® as a distance-learning tool, all busy hospital administrators, ethics committee members, nurses, chaplains, and physicians have an opportunity to conveniently earn the Master of Science in Biomedical Ethics degree, an experience that should prove a boon to their careers, their institutions, and to all of their future patients.

“LECOM is quite forward-thinking in partnering to create this highly effective, applied sciences program,” says Dr. Kathleen Gennuso, CEO and founder of the Institute of Consultative Bioethics. “The LECOM administration and faculty were very excited to be among the first to grasp the benefit of going beyond standard legal requirements and best practices, deep into robust content and real-world simulation.

Its applicable content will ultimately help protect patients and practitioners by helping professionals and their institutions avoid ethical errors and missteps, which is a real, growing concern. One need only read the daily headlines to see that increasing both the amount and depth of professional training in applied biomedical ethics needs to be a top priority.”
